The placenta is the place where he lives and to develop your baby during the nine-month-long gestation. It receives all necessary nutrients and oxygen so they can live and grow normally. But full operation begins from the 12th week of pregnancy because until then the baby is fed by other means: direct swallowing of tissue or blood cells called the trophoblast.
Although the placenta has an extraordinary power of regeneration, their life is limited to 42 weeks that is so important that pregnancies to term not longer than the time since, thereafter, the placenta begins to age and not perform its functions properly.
The placenta is formed by a group of hairs, called chorionic villi that are responsible for carrying oxygen and nourishment to the baby during pregnancy. These hairs can be young or immature, which are short and thick or mature, which are long and very thin. At the beginning of pregnancy are both young and mature because each one does its job completely different, but towards the end of pregnancy all the villi become mature, also losing the ability to regenerate. Once all the villi are mature placenta stops working properly, so the baby gets less oxygen and nutrition.
Some specific characteristics during pregnancy, such as multiple pregnancies or mothers over 35 years, can cause premature aging of the placenta. Similarly you have to wear a special watch for those pregnant women who suffer from high blood pressure or preeclampsia as they are often the main reasons for this anomaly.
