New technology for meningitis

Recent research funded by the Meningitis Research Foundation and carried out by Queen's University and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust developed a new test for meningitis. They believe that this disease, if diagnosed in the early stages would have the ability to save lives.

We have developed a test by which you can get a result of rapid diagnostic analysis of the meningococcal bacteria. The speed with which it performs this test is very important because it will depend on tratamieno to continue with the children and the prevention of meningococcal septicemia in very little time exacerbates the disease state.

Professor Mike Shields, Queen's University Belfast and the Trust announced that the first symptoms are similar to those of a simple viral infection, so it is difficult to diagnose in its early stages. The rash associated with a positive result is a late sign and may not actually appear in children who have meningitis.

Today many doctors treat with antibiotics while awaiting the outcome (which takes between 24 and 48 hours).

But what is proposed is that by developing a computer that resembles a portable home printer, and using a sample of blood or secretions such as saliva, can be tested instantly if the child has meningitis or not ..

In addition to saving lives, early detection can potentially improve outcomes for patients with meningitis, note that this disease can sometimes worsen rather the future quality of life. The machine is being tested at the A & E Department of the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children in Belfast.
